Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentAriana Grande Bio – Smartasses Magazine Ariana Grande-Butera (born June 26, 1993) is an American singer, songwriter and actress. Her name was originally inspired by Princess Oriana from Felix the Cat. Grande is of Italian descent, half Sicilian and half Abruzzese. She has an older half-brother, Frankie Grande, who is an actor, dancer, and producer. Grande was raised a Roman Catholic but abandoned Catholicism during the reign of Pope Benedict, citing opposition to the church’s stance on homosexuality.

As a child, Grande performed with the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theater, playing her first role as Annie, as well as performing in the musicals The Wizard of Oz and Beauty and the Beast. At the age of eight, she performed at a karaoke lounge on a cruise ship, in various orchestras such as South Florida’s Philharmonic, Florida Sunshine Pops and Symphonic Orchestras, and made her national television debut singing The Star-Spangled Banner for the Florida Panthers. In 2008, Grande was cast in the supporting role of cheerleader Charlotte in the musical 13 on Broadway, for which she won a National Youth Theatre Association Award. She auditioned for the Nickelodeon television show Victorious in New York along with 13 co-star Elizabeth Gillies in 2009. In this sitcom, set in a performing arts high school, Grande was cast as Cat Valentine. The show began filming in October 2009 and premiered on March 27, 2010 to the second largest audience for a live-action series in Nickelodeon history with 5.7 million viewers.

After the first season of Victorious wrapped, Grande wanted to focus on her music career and released her first single, Put Your Hearts Up, in December 2011. Grande recorded her debut album, Yours Truly, which was released on August 30, 2013. In September 2013, it debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 albums chart, with 138,000 copies sold in its first week, making Grande the first female artist, since Kesha, to have her first album debut atop of the charts, and the fifteenth female artist overall.

At the age of ten Grande co-founded the South Florida youth singing group Kids Who Care, which performed for charitable fundraising events and raised over $500,000 for charities in 2007 alone. In the summer of 2009, as a member of the charitable organization Broadway in South Africa, Grande, along with her brother Frankie, performed and taught music and dance to children in Gugulethu, South Africa. After watching Blackfish, she urged fans to stop supporting SeaWorld and has become a vegan. She was featured, along with Bridgit Mendler and Kat Graham, in Seventeen magazine in a March 2013 public campaign to end online bullying called Delete Digital Drama. She has adopted several rescue dogs as pets, and promoted pet adoption by paying the adoption fees of 35 rescue dogs in connection with her concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City and American Airlines Arena in Miami in March 2015. In May 2015, Grande and Miley Cyrus performed a cover of Crowded House’s Don’t Dream It’s Over to raise awareness for Cyrus’s Happy Hippie Foundation, which helps homeless and LGBT youths. In early 2016, she launched, with MAC Cosmetics, a line of lip shades called Ariana Grande’s MAC Viva Glam, where all of the profits benefit people affected by HIV and AIDS.

Why we think she’s hot:

When exactly Ariana Grande went from being that quirky little sidekick on Victorious with Elizabeth Gillies and Victoria Justice, to an absolute goddess adorned in leather, lace and ponytails… is beyond us. But we’re not complaining. We’re frankly just not sure when it happened since the transformation seemed to happen overnight. In fact, at this point, it’s actually probably a good thing that Ariana has so many legions of followers, because a goddess certainly does deserve her own religion. Even though she displays the occasional attitude issue, for whatever reason, unlike when Justin Bieber pulls a Joe Hollywood move where we just want to punch him in the face, when Ariana Grande displays a little entitlement in front of surveillance cameras and utilizes her charm for the sake of her own female empowerment, we have to admit that we find it hella hot. What’s even more hot though, is her veganism, her endless list of philanthropy, how she adopts rescue dogs, and the stand she takes against those who bully or discredit homosexuality. So, put it this way– if she ever does decide that she is in fact, a religion, and decrees that it’s time to start building grande churches in her honor, we’ll gladly supply the wood and bring the hammer.
