Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentEvangeline Lilly Bio – Smartasses Magazine Nicole Evangeline Lilly (born August 3, 1979) is a Canadian actress and author. Lilly was born in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada, to a devout Protestant family. She has English and Irish ancestry. Lilly graduated from W. J. Mouat Secondary School in Abbotsford, British Columbia, where she played soccer and was vice-president of the student council. Lilly’s interest in humanitarian causes and global development led her to major in International Relations at the University of British Columbia. She also studied acting at The Yaletown Actors Lab. Lilly and Norman Kali gave birth to their first child, Kahekili on May 21, 2011.

Lilly’s acting career began when she was discovered by a Ford Modeling Agency agent while walking the streets of Kelowna, British Columbia. She eventually called the agency and landed roles in commercials and non-speaking parts in the TV shows Smallville and Kingdom Hospital. Lilly was encouraged to audition for Lost by a friend and though she did not expect to get cast, she eventually went on to win a Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as receive a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Kate Austen on the show. As a result, Entertainment Weekly voted her one of its Breakout Stars of 2004. In 2008, Lilly starred in the Academy Award-winning film The Hurt Locker. She followed this role with a leading part in psychological thriller film Afterwards. In 2011, Lilly appeared as Bailey Tallet in Real Steel. In 2012, she was cast as the Mirkwood elf Tauriel in Peter Jackson’s three-part adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Lilly, who had been a fan of Tolkien’s books since she was thirteen, underwent training for swordplay and archery for the role, as well as schooling in the Elvish language. In 2015, Lilly played Hope van Dyne in the superhero film Ant-Man. In October of the same year, it was announced that she would reprise her role in the sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Marvel’s first movie to feature a female hero in the title.

Prior to Lost, Lilly worked a variety of other jobs, including a flight attendant with Royal Airlines, a waitress, and completing oil changes on large oil rigs. She also served as a foreign missionary and lived in a grass hut in the Philippines. Lilly was offered permanent missionary work there for two years, but eventually declined because of her parents’ wishes. She also volunteered at Green Bay Bible Camp in Abbotsford. On December 20, 2006, an electrical problem set fire to Lilly’s house in Kailua, Hawaii, destroying the house and all of her possessions while she was on the set of Lost. In 2010, Lilly auctioned off three lunches in Vancouver, Honolulu, and Los Angeles to help widows and orphans in Rwanda, a country she had made numerous trips to as part of her charity work. On July 18, 2013, she debuted her children’s book, The Squickerwonkers. The release event was held at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. Lilly has stated that the idea for the book first came to her when she was fourteen years old. The foreword to the book was written by Hobbit director Peter Jackson.

    Why we think she’s hot:

What better role model is there, than a gal who once lived in a grass hut to serve as a missionary in the Philippines and auctioned off her own custom lingerie to help provide housing for kids in Brazil? As far as the rest goes, few will argue that Lost, and it’s ridiculous Smoke Monster may have been some of the worst drivel to ever take the nation by storm. But no one can deny that Evangeline Lily’s monster-body and smokey eyes were one of the reasons you kept watching.
