Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentGianna Jun Bio – Smartasses Magazine Ji hyun Wang 전지현 (born October 30, 1981) is a South Korean actress and model. Jun was born in Seoul, South Korea. She studied at the Department of Theater and Film at Dongguk University. Jun wed banker Choi Joon-hyuk on April 13, 2012 at the Shilla Hotel in Jangchung-dong, central Seoul. She gave birth to the couple’s first child, a son, on February 10, 2016.

Due to her tall and slim body shape, Jun’s mother and family friends all encouraged her to be a model or actress. At the age of sixteen, a model friend introduced her to a photographer, and soon after, using the stage name Ji-hyun Jun, she began modeling for Ecole Magazine in 1997. Jun made her film debut in 1999’s White Valentine, though it was later that same year, after being featured in a commercial for the Samsung My Jet Printer, where she became an overnight sensation. After continuing her TV and modeling career, Jun made her first well-publicized film appearance in late 2000 with Il Mare. The film did respectably well at the box office and solidified her status as a star. An American remake of Il Mare entitled The Lake House, was released on June 14, 2006. Jun’s breakout film was 1999’s My Sassy Girl, a romantic comedy that brought her international recognition, and won her a Best Actress award at the 2002 Grand Bell Awards. Sassy Girl was also remade in America in 2008 and starred Elisha Cuthbert. In late 2006 it was announced that Jun would be making her long-predicted jump to Hollywood to take the lead role in Blood: The Last Vampire, where she went through three months of hard training to play the sword-wielding martial arts heroine. During the filming and promotions for the movie prior to its 2009 release, she adopted the Westernized name Gianna Jun. In 2010, Jun acted opposite Chinese actress Li Bingbing in the English-language film Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, based on Lisa See’s bestselling novel of the same name. In 2012, Jun starred in The Thieves, Choi Dong-hoon’s 2012 heist film about thieves from Korea and China who team up together to steal a diamond worth $30 million, locked in a special room at a casino in Macau. The Thieves became the second top-selling Korean film of all time. In 2015, Jun reunited with director Choi Dong-hoon for Assassination, an espionage action film set during the 1930s colonial era in which she played a sniper who assembles a squad of independence fighters to kill a Japanese army commander and a pro-Japanese Korean business tycoon. The film was another box-office success for Choi and Jun, becoming the highest-grossing Korean film of the year, as well as the eighth all-time highest grossing film in Korean cinema history.

At an early age, Jun’s childhood dream was to become a flight attendant, but she later gave up the notion after a poor plane flight experience. Jun was photographed by Annie Leibovitz for the July issue of the American edition of Vogue, the first Korean actress to be included in the iconic fashion magazine. In a 2005 survey of influential movie producers, Jun was ranked among the top ten most bankable stars in Korea. In 2016, she was ranked 8th on the Korea Power Celebrity 40, a list compiled by the magazine Forbes Korea. It was her second consecutive year in the top ten, having been ranked fourth in 2015.

Why we think she’s hot:

In our opinion, the actress and model who is better known as Jeon Ji-hyun or Jun Ji-hyun, is one of the most unknown and underrated celebrities around- assuming you don’t live in South Korea that is. Most American’s may have gotten their first glimpse of Ji hyun after she westernized her name to Gianna Jun, and starred as Saya in Chris Nahon’s action-horror thriller, Blood: The Last Vampire. But just like it was in South Korea, she won our hearts and then some, after her magical performance in My Sassy Girl. We also love Miss Jun for the same reason we love a lot of Scorpios, meaning she excels at waxing innocent, when there’s oh-so-much defiant, playful whimsy behind those eyes.
