Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentGina Gershon Bio – Smartasses Magazine Gina L. Gershon (born June 10, 1962) is an American film and television actress. Gershon was born in Los Angeles, and raised in a Jewish family in San Fernando Valley, the daughter of mother Mickey Koppel and father Stan Gershon. She has an older brother, Dan, and an older sister, Tracy. Gershon went to Collier Street Elementary School and Woodland Hills Academy, and attended Beverly Hills High School. After graduating in 1980, she moved to Boston to attend Emerson College. She later transferred to New York University where she graduated with a BFA in drama and child psychology in 1983. Gershon also attended the Circle in the Square Professional Theater School in New York.

Gershon had originally said that she wanted to be an actor, however, her career began in music and dance. Her first acting venues were stage appearances in Camille and The Substance of Fire. Her first break in film came with a bit part in 1986’s Pretty in Pink, which led to more substantial roles in Sweet Revenge, Cocktail with Tom Cruise, Showgirls, and the urban drama City of Hope in 1991. In 1996, Gershon played Corky, an ex-con who gets mixed up in a lesbian affair with Jennifer Tilly’s Violet, in the mobster flick Bound. The following year, she costarred with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage in Face/Off. Gershon has also worked in television, with recurring roles on Melrose Place, Z-Nation, Snoops, Just Shoot Me!, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Rescue Me, and the U.S. dramedy series Ugly Betty. She also won critical acclaim for her portrayal of Nancy Sinatra in the made-for-TV biopic Sinatra. Gershon has also served as the voiceover for Major League Baseball’s I Live For This promotional campaign, and played the voice of Catwoman in the 2007 animated series The Batman. She also voiced Shikata in Spider-Man: The New Animated series. Gershon has also appeared on Broadway in Boeing-Boeing, as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, and as Rosie Alvarez in the 2010 Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie.

Gershon attended high school with Lenny Kravitz. She, along with Helen Slater, is one of the founding members of the New York-based theater group Naked Angel. Gershon had a cameo role in The Cars 1984 video Hello Again alongside Andy Warhol. She also appeared in Lenny Kravitz’s music video entitled Again. Gershon and her brother Dan are the authors of the children’s book Camp Creepy Time.

Why we think she’s hot:

Whether you caught her as the dry cleaning seductress on Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, or cling to how saucy she was in Showgirls or Cocktail, Gina Gershon is the absolute zenith for the over-forty crowd. She’s also the definitive pinnacle for the lesbian community as well, after her stellar roles in Prey for Rock & Roll, Showgirls, and Bound opposite Jennifer Tilly. Suffice it to say, the latter performance was indeed so powerful, that it promptly landed Miss Gershon into the gay icon category for life.
