Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentHelen Slater Bio – Smartasses Magazine Helen Rachel Schlacter (born December 15, 1963) is an American actress and singer-songwriter. Born in Bethpage, NY and raised in Massapequa, Long Island, Slater is the daughter of Alice and Gerald Schlacter. She has a brother, David, and her family is Jewish. Slater attended Great Neck South High School and then transferred to the High School of Performing Arts, where she graduated in 1982. She also attended classes at both NYU and UCLA. Slater married editor Robert Watzke in 1990, and their daughter, Hannah Nika, was born in 1995.

Slater made her acting debut in 1982, in the ABC Afterschool Special Amy & the Angel, alongside James Earl Jones, Meg Ryan, and Matthew Modine. In television, she has since appeared on several episodes of countless television series, including Capital News, Caroline in the City, Boston Public, Will & Grace, Grey’s Anatomy, Supernatural, CSI: NY, Gigantic, The Lying Game, The Young & the Restless, and The New Adventures of Old Christine opposite Tricia O’Kelley, Alex Kapp-Horner and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Slater also voiced Talia in four episodes of Batman: The Animated Series, and played the recurring role of Clark Kent’s biological mother on the TV series Smallville, alongside Kristin Kreuk. In 1992, she made a guest appearance on an episode of Seinfeld, which was significant, in that Jerry Seinfeld is in reality a huge fan of Superman, and in 2015, she began her recurring role as Kara’s adoptive mother on the CBS/CW television series Supergirl, alongside Jenna Dewan, Chyler Leigh and Melissa Benoist. Slater’s breakthrough performance came in 1984, when she played the title character opposite Faye Dunaway and Peter O’Toole, in the TriStar film production, Supergirl. Following the performance, alongside Christian Slater and Yeardley Smith, she was again cast as the title character in the 1985 film The Legend of Billie Jean. Slater then went on to star in the high-profile comedies, Ruthless People in 1986, and 1987’s The Secret of My Success. Her other noteworthy performances include appearances in the 1988 cult classic comedy Sticky Fingers, the 1996 action-crime drama No Way Back opposite Russell Crowe, the 1991 Billy Crystal comedy City Slickers, and alongside Andy Richter in 2004’s Seeing Other People. Along with Gina Gershon, Slater co-founded the New York theater group, The Naked Angels. Slater is also a pianist and classically trained singer. In 2003, she released a compilation of original piano songs entitled One of These Days, where all of the tracks were recorded in real-time with no multi-tracking, editing, or dubbing. In 2005, she released a second CD, Crossword, and her third album, Shine, was released in late 2010. Slater also wrote the “day in the life of Supergirl tale” entitled A Hero’s Journey, which appeared in the 50th issue of the Supergirl comic book.

In 1985, DC Comics named Slater as one of the honorees, in the company’s 50th anniversary publication Fifty Who Made DC Great, for her work on the Supergirl film. As a philanthropist, Slater supports the Tree People, which encourages personal responsibility for the environment, as well as Access Books, which provides high-interest books to inner city schools and libraries in Southern California. She is also a strong supporter of Laguardia Arts, as well as Heal the Bay, which sets out to bring awareness to the ever-increasing risks to the marine environment. Despite common misconception, Slater is not related to actor Christian Slater, who played her brother in The Legend of Billie Jean.

Why we think she’s hot:

In a day and age of cosplay, where there’s a great deal more faces in the crowd, even decades after the original film, Helen Slater still remains the perfect Supergirl. Seeing as how we ranked the Maid of Might purdy darn high on the Smartasses Magazine Top 50 Comic Book Babes of All Time, we think that’s saying quite a lot. Don’t get us wrong, Melissa Benoist is amazing as an actress and unquestionably does the Girl of Steel proud, but Miss Slater simply set the gold standard. Well, Helen raises the bar for being an all around woman of class also, as her work with Raise The Bay and the Tree People undeniably attests to.
