Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentHilary Swank Bio – Smartasses Magazine Hilary Ann Swank (born July 30, 1974) is an American film actress. Swank’s mother, Judy Kay Clough was a secretary and dancer, while her father, Stephen Michael Swank, was a Chief Master Sergeant in the Oregon Air National Guard. She also has an older brother, Daniel. After living in Spokane, Washington, Swank’s family moved to a trailer park in Bellingham, Washington when she was six years old. She attended Happy Valley Elementary and Fairhaven Middle, then studied at Sehome High School until she was sixteen. After the separation of her parents when she was fifteen, Swank and her mother moved to Los Angeles where she enrolled at South Pasadena High School, dropping out later because of her ADHD and lack of interest. Swank is of German, English, Swiss-German, Scottish, Scots-Irish, Welsh, and Dutch roots, though the surname Swank, originally Schwenk, is of German origin.

Swank made her first appearance on stage when she was nine years old, starring in The Jungle Book. She made her film acting debut as Kimberly, in the 1992 film Buffy the Vampire Slayer, while her first leading role in a film came in 1994’s The Next Karate Kid, which was the fourth movie in the Karate Kid series. In September 1997, Swank was cast as Carly Reynolds on the hit series Beverly Hills, 90210, but saw her character written out after sixteen episodes. Her other notable television appearances early in her career include Growing Pains, Harry and the Hendersons, Evening Shade and Camp Wilder. In 1999, Swank garnered critical acclaim for her portrayal of Brandon Teena in the independent film Boys Don’t Cry, earning her the Academy Award for Best Actress, as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama. Five years later, she starred as Maggie Fitzgerald in Clint Eastwood’s 2004 sports drama film Million Dollar Baby, which won her a second Oscar, in addition to a Golden Globe for Best Actress. With her second Oscar, Swank joined the ranks of Vivien Leigh and Luise Rainer as the only actresses to have been nominated for Academy Awards twice, with a win both times. Her other noteworthy film work includes Insomnia, The Gift, 11:14, Red Dust, P.S. I Love You, The Resident, 55 Steps, and the title role of the 2009 Amelia Earhart biographical drama, Amelia. Swank received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 8, 2007 and was the 2,325th star presented. She was also named one of People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People in 2000, 2004 and 2005.

Swank reduced her body fat to seven percent in preparation for her role in Boys Don’t Cry, which many critics hailed as the best female performance of 1999. She earned only $75 per day for her work on the film, culminating in a total of $3,000– earnings so low she could not even qualify for health insurance. As a youth, Swank competed in the Junior Olympics as well as the Washington state championships in swimming. She also ranked fifth in the state in gymnastics. After their move to Los Angeles when she was fifteen, Swank and her mother lived out of their car until her mother saved enough money to rent them an apartment.

Why we think she’s hot:

If by some strange stroke of happenstance, you ever find yourself in a setting or dwelling where the best actresses of modern times becomes a topic of conversation, and someone utters the phrase, “Hilary Swank couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag”, do us a favor- decide whether you are right or left handed, curl your fingers on said hand towards your palm until your knuckles make a hard, firm surface, and proceed to sock the simpleton who uttered such nonsense squarely in the back of the head. Not only does Hilary have more awards than Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov had human rights abuses, she also has a well deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame- the latter of which she received when she was only 32 years old. We don’t care what anyone says, just like Miss Swank’s symmetrically perfect eyebrows and killer legs… that’s hot. We’d love to go a few rounds with this million dollar baby, any day of the week.
