Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentIU Lee Jieun Bio – Smartasses Magazine Lee Ji-eun 이지은 (born May 16, 1993) best known as IU is a South Korean recording artist and actress. Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea. Her stage name is derived from I and You, meaning to become one through music. Lee graduated from Dongduk Girls’ High School in 2011.

At an early age, Lee became interested in pursuing a career in the entertainment industry and began attending acting classes. Soon after her elementary school years, her family’s financial situation deteriorated, and they eventually moved to Uijeongbu. Lee and her younger brother lived apart from their parents, in a studio room with her grandmother and cousins for over a year, in conditions of great poverty. Before joining LOEN Entertainment in 2007, she trained at Good Entertainment with G.NA, Uee, Yubin, Heo Ga-yoon, and Jun Hyoseong. Lee debuted on Mnet’s M Countdown on September 18, 2008, and released her debut mini-album Lost and Found less than a week later with her debut single Lost Child. She did not gain mainstream popularity until her follow-up album Growing Up released on April 16, 2009, and within three weeks her lead single Boo reached number one on the charts. As one of the best-selling solo artists in the Kpop industry, Lee has been included on Forbes magazine’s annual Korea Power Celebrity 40 list since 2012. Billboard recognized her as the all-time leader of its Korea Kpop Hot 100 chart with the most number-one songs, as well as the artist who has held the number one position for the most number of weeks.

Aside from her music career, Lee has also ventured into hosting radio and television shows, as well as acting. Following her supporting role in the teen drama Dream High and minor appearances in several television series, she starred in You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin, Pretty Man, and The Producers. In August 2009, Lee became a host for Gom Music Chart on GomTV, a weekly show where South Korean’s vote for their favorite songs on the charts. For a time, Lee also became a fixed guest on Super Junior’s Kiss the Radio, Maybee’s Raise the Volume, and MBC’s Starry Night. She has also served as a VJ for the MBC show Game’s Star for You and is also one of twelve original female cast members chosen for the SBS variety show Heroes. Over the course of her career, Lee has endorsed various products from electronics to clothing and cosmetics, including Union Bay, G by GUESS?, Mexicana Chicken, Samsung, SK Telecom and Elite school uniforms, and she was also chosen to be the ambassador for the 2012 Yeosu Expo Korea.

Since February 2012, Lee has been an ambassador for South Korea’s National Police Agency in their anti-bullying campaigns in schools, and was made an honorary member of the police force in 2013 before being promoted to an honorary senior police officer in 2014 for a two-year term. In South Korea, she is often referred to as the Nation’s Little Sister. As of 2015, Lee has one of the biggest official fan clubs in Korea. Her fan club’s name is Uaena, where each syllable has a different meaning. U is You, ae is Sino-Korean for love, and na is Korean for me.

Why we think she’s hot:

When people refer to you as the Nation’s Little Sister like they do for IU, and begin murmuring about you possibly usurping BoA as the Queen of KPop, you’re probably doing something correctly. Furthermore, when Samsung selects you to represent their Anycall brand, previously endorsed by goddesses like Hyori Lee and the aforementioned BoA, it’s also a pretty big deal. Gigs like that, nor gigs like being a spokesmodel for Elite school uniforms or GUESS? aren’t handed out to just any Tam, Deike or Harriet. Which means, face the facts– Ji-eun Lee is one South Korean knockout who so infinitely embodies everything that is aegyo, she could probably cough for 180 seconds and the recording would still go gold.
