Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentJennifer Lopez Bio – Smartasses Magazine Jennifer Lynn Lopez (born July 24, 1969) often nicknamed J.Lo, is an American actress, singer, record producer, dancer, television personality, fashion designer and television producer. Lopez is the daughter of Puerto Rican parents and was raised as a Roman Catholic. She has an older sister, Leslie, and a younger sister, Lynda. Lopez spent her entire academic career in Catholic schools, finishing at the all-girls Preston High School in the Bronx. After attending Baruch College for one semester, she divided her time between working as a notary public in a legal office, dance classes, and dance performances in Manhattan night clubs. Following the breakdown of her first marriage, Lopez dated rapper and entertainment mogul Sean Combs. After a failed second marriage to husband Cris Judd, she had a high-profile relationship with actor Ben Affleck, with their planned wedding being cancelled four days before the ceremony. Lopez then wed longtime friend Marc Anthony. The couple separated after seven years of marriage. Lopez gave birth to their twins, Emme and Maximilian, in 2008.

Lopez financed singing and dancing lessons for herself at the age of nineteen. Before beginning her career as a Fly Girl dancer on the television comedy program In Living Color, she had a small part in the 1987 film My Little Girl, at the age of sixteen. Eventually, she became a backup dancer for Janet Jackson and made an appearance in her 1993 video That’s the Way Love Goes. Lopez made her acting debut on the FOX series South Central, and subsequently ventured into films where she gained recognition in the 1995 action-thriller Money Train. Her first leading role was in the biographical film Selena, in which she earned an ALMA Award for Outstanding Actress. For her role in Out of Sight the following year, she became the first Latina actress to earn over $1 million for a film. In 1999, Lopez ventured into the music industry with her debut studio album On the 6 preceded by the number-one single If You Had My Love. With the simultaneous release of her second studio album J.Lo and her film The Wedding Planner in 2001, Lopez became the first woman to have a number one album and film in the same week. VH1 ranked Lopez at number 15 on their list of the 200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons, number 16 on their 100 Greatest Women In Music compendium, and number 21 on their list of the 50 Greatest Women of the Video Era. In 2013, Lopez was presented with the prestigious landmark 2,500th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her musical contributions. Furthermore, she was honored with the Billboard Icon Award in 2014 for her contributions to the music industry, making her the first female recipient of the award.

Lopez has been criticized by the animal rights organization PETA for inclusion of fur in her fashion lines and outfits. Beyond entertainment, she enjoys a highly successful business career consisting of various clothing lines, accessories, fragrances and a production company, as well as television shows and a charitable foundation among other ventures. According to Forbes, Lopez is the richest person of Latin American descent in Hollywood, and made 9th on the Forbes list of The 20 Richest Women In Entertainment in 2007, with an estimated wealth of $110 million. In school, Lopez ran track on a national level, and was on the school softball team. In 2009, she launched the Lopez Family Foundation alongside her sister, Lynda. The nonprofit organization seeks to increase the availability of healthcare for underprivileged women and children. She is also an avid supporter of LGBT rights, and has raised millions of dollars for HIV/AIDS research.

Why we think she’s hot:

Everyone knows the story of Jennifer Lopez’ days as a Fly Girl dancer on In Living Color. We all know about her days of backup dancing for Janet Jackson, her ground breaking role in Selena, and the countless romantic comedies, fragrances and observations about her booty. But let’s cut to the chase: Forbes lists J-Lo as the richest person of Latin American descent in Hollywood, and People calls her the Most Influential Hispanic entertainer in the United States. All of that awesome’y female power alone is scintillating, but let’s dumb it down another shade– as fellow American Idol judge Randy Jackson would say, Jennifer Lopez is “hot, dude” and we agree. To quote Randy again, “That’s how you do it, dawg.”
