Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentJolin Tsai Bio – Smartasses Magazine Jolin Tsai 蔡依林 (born September 15, 1980) is a Taiwanese singer, songwriter, dancer, actress and entrepreneur. Tsai was born to parents Tsai Chu-chen and Huang Chun-mei in Hsinchuang, Taipei County, Taiwan. She attended Hsinchuang Elementary School where she was a 200 meter sprinter in until injuring her ankle. She later attended Hsinchuang Junior High School and Chingmei Girls’ High School where she and her friends formed a band Twister. Tsai studied English during her youth and eventually majored in English Literature at Fu Jen Catholic University.

Known for reinventing both her music and image, Tsai is cited as a large part of popularizing dance music as mainstream music in Greater China. She developed an interest in singing and experimented with different vocal techniques after listening to the songs of popular female singers including Teresa Teng and Faye Wong. In her second year of high school, she made her performance debut on campus, and sang the Cranberries’ Zombie at the welcome party of the school’s pop music association. Tsai began her professional singing career by taking part in an MTV singing competition at the age of eighteen, and won the top prize at the competition with her rendition of Whitney Houston’s number one hit, Greatest Love of All. She was then signed by Universal Music. In July 1999, her first single, Living With the World was released. It was sold in convenience stores and led to the release of her first album, Jolin 1019, in September 1999. At that time, she was promoted as “The Girl Next Door,” and was an instant hit with teenagers, earning her the title “Teenage Boy Killer”. She was later nominated as the Best Asian Act in the 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards, marking her as the first Taiwanese artist nominated for the award. Forbes reported that Tsai is one of the highest-paid Chinese celebrities, with the estimated net worth of NT$2 billion in 2014.

During a two year period when she faced conflict with her recording company Tsai pursued an acting career, and debuted in a soap series called Hi, Working Girl. She has also appeared as herself on several episodes of the television series, Day Day Up.

Tsai is called Asia’s Dancing Queen due to her diversity of dancing styles, such as pole dancing, ribbon dancing, and gymnastic movements. Tsai has supported various charitable organizations and causes during her career. In 1999, she donated part of the sales revenue of her debut album to help the victims of 1999 Jiji earthquake. In 2003, she and other Taiwanese artists recorded a single titled Hand in Hand with the intention to call for fighting against the 2003 SARS outbreak. In 2016, Tsai joined Bazaar Charity Fund Foundation and China Siyuan Foundation for Poverty Alleviation to donate NT$3.5 million to help purchase ambulances for poverty-stricken areas in China.

Why we think she’s hot:

After rendering a cover of Whitney Houston’s former number one hit, Greatest Love of All, garnering her the top prize at an MTV competition in 1998, the good folks at Universal Music quickly put the pen to paper for Jolin Tsai. Years later her own song, Slow Life, was being used by nearly 3,000 schools in Taiwan as a replacement for the old-style recess bell. And no, we’re not kidding. It may be even harder to believe that this raven haired, Virgo, Teenage Boy Killer turned 30 in September 2010- considering how she effortlessly employs the kind of youthful looks, which could easily allow her to pass as one of the girls on those very same schoolyards
