Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentKate Moss Bio – Smartasses Magazine Katherine Ann Moss (born January 16, 1974) is a British model. Moss is the daughter of Linda Rosina Shepherd & Peter Edward Moss, and has a younger brother, Nick, as well as a half-sister named Lottie. She has a daughter with Dazed & Confused editor Jefferson Hack, Lila Grace Moss, born on September 29, 2002. Moss attended Ridgeway Primary School and Riddlesdown Collegiate in Purley.

Moss was discovered in 1988 at the age of fourteen at JFK Airport in New York, after a holiday in the Bahamas, by Sarah Doukas, the founder of Storm Model Management. Corinne Day then shot black & white photographs of Moss for The Face when she was sixteen, in a shoot entitled The 3rd Summer of Love. Moss rose to fame in the early 1990s as part of the heroin chic fashion trend. She is known for her waifish figure, and for her role in size zero fashion. Dubbed the Anti-Supermodel, many saw Moss in direct contrast to the models of the moment such as Cindy Crawford, Elle Macpherson, Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell, who were known for curvaceous and tall figures. Moss has been featured in ad campaigns for, among others, Chanel, Versace, Alexander Wang, Givenchy, Roberto Cavalli, Yves Saint Laurent, Dior, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen and Bulgari. She has been in fashion spreads in most magazines including Vogue, Vanity Fair and W. Drug allegations beginning in late 2005 led to Moss being dropped from fashion campaigns, however she was later cleared of all charges and resumed modeling. In November 2006, she was named Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. In 2013, she also received an award at the British Fashion Awards to acknowledge her contribution to fashion over 25 years. In 2007, with estimated earnings of $9 million, Forbes named Moss second on the list of the World’s 15 Top Earning Models, behind Gisele Bundchen. That same year she made her first appearance on the Sunday Times Rich List, where she was estimated to be worth £45 million, and ranked as the 99th richest woman in Britain. Moss has put her name to four perfume lines. Her first one is named Kate Moss. Other perfumes include Vintage Muse, Lila Belle and Love Blossoms.

The cello rock group Rasputina had a song entitled Kate Moss on their 1996 album Thanks for the Ether. In 2005, a painting of Moss by Lucian Freud sold for £3.93 million at Christie’s. In 2007, Time named Moss one of the World’s 100 Most Influential People. In 2008, an 18 carat gold statue of Moss made by Marc Quinn and entitled Siren was part of a British Museum exhibition. The statue is said to be the largest gold statue created since the era of Ancient Egypt. Quinn had previously unveiled a painted-bronze, life-size sculpture of Moss in a contorted yoga pose, entitled Sphinx. In 2013, the Belgian pop singer Stromae wrote Kate Moss into the lyrics of the song Tous les memes, singing there’s only Kate Moss who is eternal.

Moss once designed a charm in a necklace for Wallis in 2007, in aid of Cancer Research UK. She also helped to launch the SamandRuby charity in March 2006, to provide funding for the education and shelter of Thai children. Moss also supports the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Hoping Foundation, the Lucie Blackman Trust, Make Poverty History, Comic Relief and Homes of Hope.

Why we think she’s hot:

British artist Marc Quinn unveiled a sculpture of Kate Moss in solid 18 carat gold, called Siren, which was exhibited in the British Museum in London. The life size sculpture was promoted as the largest gold statue since ancient Egypt and presents Kate Moss as a modern-day Aphrodite, reminding us that her likeness has become as iconic as the goddesses of the ancient world. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
