Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentMaria Sharapova Bio – Smartasses Magazine Maria Yuryevna Sharapova (born April 19, 1987) is a Russian professional tennis player. Her parents, Yuri and Elena, are from Gomel, Belarus. When Sharapova was two, the family moved to Sochi. She has been a United States resident since 1994.

At the age of six, Sharapova attended a tennis clinic in Moscow run by Martina Navratilova, who recommended she receive professional training at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida. As a result, her father borrowed money to enable the two of them, neither of whom could speak English, to travel to the United States and enroll Sharapova in the academy in 1994, though visa restrictions prevented her mother from joining them for two years. Arriving in Florida with a savings of only $700, her father took various low-paying jobs to fund her lessons until, in 1995 at the age of nine, she was signed by IMG, who agreed to pay the annual tuition fee of $35,000 for her to stay at the academy. Sharapova made her professional debut in 2001 on her fourteenth birthday. In September 2003, she captured her first WTA title at the Japan Open Tennis Championships. In July 2004, Sharapova became the third-youngest woman to win Wimbledon, when she upset top seed and defending champion Serena Williams, winning her first Grand Slam singles title. Sharapova is one of ten women, and the only Russian, to hold the career Grand Slam. She is also an Olympic medalist, having earned a silver for Russia in women’s singles at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Sharapova became the world number one for the first time on August 22, 2005, at the age of eighteen. Despite an injury-prone career, she has won at least one singles title a year from 2003 until 2015, a streak only bested by Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, and Chris Evert. Several tennis pundits and former players have called Sharapova one of tennis’s best competitors, with John McEnroe calling her one of the best the sport has ever seen. In June 2011, she was named one of the 30 Legends of Women’s Tennis: Past, Present and Future by Time magazine, and in March 2012 she was named one of the 100 Greatest of All Time by the Tennis Channel. According to Forbes, Sharapova was the highest paid female athlete in the world for eleven consecutive years, and earned $285 million including prize money after turning pro in 2001.

Sharapova has been featured in many advertisements, including Nike, Prince, and Canon, as well as being the face of several fashion houses, most notably Cole Haan. In 2014, Sharapova, became a correspondent for NBC’s coverage of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Concerned about the regional effects of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident, her parents left their homeland shortly before Maria was born. As a result, Sharapova has donated over $100,000 to Chernobyl-related projects, and on February 14, 2007, she was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme, where she donated $210,000 to UNDP Chernobyl-recovery projects.

Why we think she’s hot:

We’re probably stating the obvious when we say women’s tennis players have a special place in the hearts of many. It’s all such a dichotomy– a classic sport often enjoyed by the likes of royalty and the non hoi polloi… yet there’s all those short skirts. With that said, it’s difficult to recall anyone serving an ace on the world and becoming a media darling as easily as Maria Sharapova did, mere months before her eighteenth birthday back in 2004. Whether it was Nikon or Nike, Maria was everywhere… and rightfully so. With her long legs and saucy little obsession with gold, she’ll be standing on the podium on our court for a long, long time.
