Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentNaomi Campbell Bio – Smartasses Magazine Naomi Elaine Campbell (born May 22, 1970) is a British model. She was born in Streatham, South London, the daughter of Valerie Morris. Campbell has never met her father, who was unnamed on her birth certificate– she took the surname Campbell from her mother’s second marriage. Campbell has a half-brother, Pierre, and is of Afro-Jamaican and Chinese descent. She attended the Barbara Speake Stage School, and later the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, where she studied ballet. Campbell dated boxer Mike Tyson in the late 1980s, followed by an on-again-off-again relationship with actor Robert De Niro in the early 1990s.

Campbell’s first public appearance came in 1978 at the age of seven, when she was featured in Bob Marley’s Is This Love? music video. She also appeared in the 1981 film, Quest For Fire. In 1986 while still a student, Campbell was scouted by head of the Synchro Model Agency Beth Boldt, while window-shopping in Covent Garden. Her career quickly took off, and just before her sixteenth birthday she appeared on the cover of British Elle. By the late 1980s, Campbell, along with Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista, formed a trio known as the Trinity, who became the most recognizable models of their generation. The threesome was also part of the group of six models alongside Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford and Kate Moss known as supermodels. In addition to her modeling career, Campbell has an R&B-pop studio album and several acting appearances in film and television. She, along with Elle Macpherson and Claudia Schiffer, opened the Fashion Cafe in New York, and since 1999 she has released sixteen fragrances for women.

In 2000, Campbell pleaded guilty in a Toronto court to a 1998 assault on Georgina Galanis, her then assistant. In March 2005, she allegedly slapped her assistant Amanda Brack, and beat her with a personal organizer. On March 30, 2006 Campbell was arrested for allegedly assaulting her housekeeper with a jewel-encrusted mobile phone. On October 25, 2006, she was again arrested on suspicion of assault, but later released on bail. On November 14, 2006, former Campbell housekeeper, Gaby Gibson sought damages, and accused Campbell of being a violent super-bigot. On January 16, 2007, she pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless assault against her housekeeper Ana Scolavino. On April 3, 2008, Campbell was arrested inside Heathrow Airport on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. On March 2, 2010, her limousine driver filed a report claiming that Campbell had slapped and punched him. In July 2015, Campbell was sentenced to six months’ probation by a Sicilian court for her August 2009 assault on a paparazzo photographer.

In May 2006, Campbell’s face adorned a 75 euro cent postage stamp issued by the Austrian Post Office. In 1982, she appeared as a tap dancer for Culture Club’s I’ll Tumble 4 Ya music video. Campbell is the first black female model on the cover of French Vogue, British Vogue, and Time magazine. Having never met her biological father, Campbell says that she regards Quincy Jones and Chris Blackwell as adopted father figures, and Nelson Mandela as an adopted grandfather. Throughout her career, Campbell has been outspoken against the racial bias that exists in the fashion industry. She supports the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, Breakthrough Breast Cancer, and founded the charity We Love Brazil in 2005. Since 2007, Campbell has been the honorary president of Atlha Onlus, an Italian organization that works to further the social integration of young people with learning disabilities. In 2009, she became a goodwill ambassador for the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood. Campbell has since joined Sarah Brown, the wife of former British prime minister Gordon Brown, on several missions to promote maternal health.

Why we think she’s hot:

A few odd decades later, we can now look back on pop culture history and say that if you’re one of the women who made an appearance lipsyncing in George Michael’s Freedom 90 video… you’re an icon. Well, along with Tatjana Patitz, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell is one of the icons on that list. So what makes Naomi so special? Aside of her Just do as I say attitude, which gratuitously helped pave the way for other generations of young girls to learn that it was okay to wear the pants as a woman, Miss Campbell is also in possession of a perfect pucker, exceptionally long legs, and just enough Chinese in her blood to make her look even more exotic. Folks, they called her a super model for a reason.
