Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentPriyanka Chopra Bio – Smartasses Magazine Priyanka Chopra (born July 18, 1982) is an Indian actress, singer, producer, philanthropist, and the winner of the Miss World 2000 pageant. Chopra was born in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand to Ashok Chopra and Madhu Akhauri, both physicians by profession. She has a brother, Siddharth, who is seven years her junior, while actresses Parineeti Chopra, Meera Chopra and Mannara are her cousins. She studied at La Martiniere Girls’ School in Lucknow, and subsequently relocated to the U.S. at the age of 13 where she studied at Newton South High School in Newton, Massachusetts, and then at John F. Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After three years, Chopra returned to India, finishing her senior year at the Army Public School in Bareilly. She began college at Jai Hind College in Mumbai, but left after winning the Miss World pageant.

Chopra’s mother entered her into the Femina Miss India pageant of 2000, where she finished second. She then went on to the Miss World pageant, where she was crowned Miss World 2000 and Miss World Continental Queen of Beauty Asia & Oceania at the Millennium Dome in London on November 30, 2000. Chopra was the fifth Indian contestant to win Miss World, and the fourth to do so in seven years.

While in Massachusetts, Chopra participated in several theatre productions and studied Western classical music, choral singing and Kathak dance. Before starting her acting career, she worked as a model and gained fame after winning Miss World. Although Chopra initially aspired to study engineering or psychiatry, she accepted offers to join the Indian film industry, making her Hindi film debut in The Hero in 2003. She also played the leading lady in the box-office hits Andaaz and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, and earned praise for her breakout role in the 2004 thriller Aitraaz. In 2006, Chopra established herself as a leading actress of Indian cinema with starring roles in the top-grossing productions Krrish and Don. Following a brief setback, she received critical acclaim for playing a troubled model in the 2008 drama Fashion, which won her the National Film Award for Best Actress and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Chopra subsequently gained recognition for her versatility in portraying a range of unconventional characters in the films Kaminey, 7 Khoon Maaf, Barfi!, Mary Kom, Dil Dhadakne Do, and Bajirao Mastani. In 2015, Chopra began starring as Alex Parrish on the ABC thriller series Quantico, becoming the first South Asian woman to headline an American network series. As a singer, she has released three singles. Chopra is also the founder of the production company Purple Pebble Pictures.

While still in high school in India, Chopra won the local May Queen beauty pageant, after which she was pursued by admirers, leading her family to equip their home with bars for her protection. In the same year Chopra was crowned Miss World, Lara Dutta and Dia Mirza, both also from India, won the Miss Universe and Miss Asia Pacific crowns respectively, in a rare triple victory for one country. In addition to her acting career, Chopra is noted for her philanthropic work, and was appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Child Rights in 2010. She promotes various causes such as environment, health and education, and women’s rights, and is particularly vocal about gender equality, and gender pay gap. Though Chopra is reticent to discuss her personal life in public, her off-screen life is the subject of substantial media coverage.

Why we think she’s hot:

It’s hard to believe that any winner of a Miss India or Miss World Pageant could have a nickname like, ‘Piggy Chops’ but for Priyanka Chopra, supermodel and actress, it’s true- and she did indeed win both of those titles back in 2000. Nowadays, for the girl whose father was a physician in the Indian Army and subsequently spent most of her high school days here in the good old USA, it’s more about acting. Chopra earned a Filmfare Best Actress Award and a National Film Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of a model (must have been an easy part for her to play, eh?) in the 2008 film Fashion, and has truly established herself as one of the leading contemporary actresses in Bollywood. Though, after Quantico, Priyanka may just get popular enough to turn Bollywood into Hollywood and get herself a star onto the most famous catwalk of all, the Walk of Fame.
