Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentSarah Shahi Bio – Smartasses Magazine Aahoo Jahansouz Shahi (born January 10, 1980) is an American actress and former NFL Cheerleader. She was born in Euless, Texas, to an Iranian father and a Spanish mother, and has an older brother. Her younger sister, Samantha, is a production assistant. Shahi’s birthname, Aahoo, means gazelle in Persian. She adopted the name Sarah in second grade after hearing a song called Sarah, because she was bullied by other children about her unusual name. Shahi grew up speaking Persian/Farsi as well as English, at the behest of her father. She attended Trinity High School, where she was captain of the volleyball and basketball teams, as well as Dallas’ Southern Methodist University where she majored in English and opera. On February 7, 2009, Shahi married actor Steve Howey, and the couple gave birth to their first child, William Wolf Howey on July 8, 2009. On March 1, 2015, the couple gave birth to twins, daughter Violet Moon and son Knox Blue.

Shahi’s parents began entering her in beauty pageants at the age of eight, and in 1997, she was crowned Miss Fort Worth. Hoping to become an actress, she joined the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders squad in 1999, and despite never having cheered before, she appeared on the cover of the squad’s 2000 calendar. While working as a movie extra in Texas, Shahi met director Robert Altman on the set of Dr. T and the Women, who encouraged her to move to Hollywood. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2000, she received roles in several series, including Alias alongside Jennifer Garner, Reba, and Dawson’s Creek opposite Bianca Kajlich. Shahi was also the first ghost in the CW paranormal drama series Supernatural in 2005. That same year, she also appeared as DJ Carmen de la Pica Morales on The L Word, and joined the show full time during its second season. However, she did not renew her contract with the show for a fourth season, and consequently her character was written out. In 2006, Shahi took on the role of Tina Torres on the television series Teachers, and also played Farah in the second season of Sleeper Cell. In 2007, she appeared on one episode of HBO’s The Sopranos, and also had a small role in Rush Hour 3, opposite Chris Tucker, Jackie Chan and Noemie Lenoir. Later that year, Shahi took on her first permanent leading role on a TV series, co-starring with Damian Lewis in the NBC series Life, as homicide detective Dani Reese. In October 2009, she landed the lead role in the USA Network show Fairly Legal. The show was cancelled after two seasons. In 2012, Shahi was cast as a recurring love interest for Taylor Kinney’s character Lt. Kelly Severide on NBC’s show Chicago Fire, and was also cast as Sameen Shaw on Person of Interest. Later that same year, she played the daughter of Sylvester Stallone’s character in the action film Bullet to the Head. In February 2016, Shahi was cast as iconic detective Nancy Drew in a planned CBS series based on the books, however CBS passed on the series in May.

Shahi is the great-great-granddaughter of Fath-Ali Shah Qajar of the Qajar Dynasty, who ruled Iran from 1797 to 1834. When Shahi randomly auditioned and got the part of Carmen de la Pica Morales on The L Word in 2004, she wasn’t sure that she wanted the role because of the character having to partake in various lovemaking scenes with other women, but she now considers it her dream role, and ranks it among her best work. Shahi is a supporter of Oceana, which fights against offshore oil and destructive fishing, in an effort to protect the oceans for sharks and turtles, and promote clean energy.
