Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentSunny Bio – Smartasses Magazine Soon kyu Lee 이순규 (born May 15, 1989) is an American-born South Korean singer and actress. Her father, Lee Soo-young, is the elder brother of SM Entertainment founder, Lee Soo-man. Lee has two older sisters who share her birthdate, though they were born in different years. While she was still an infant, her family moved to Kuwait, and later moved to South Korea during the Gulf War. Lee speaks fluent Korean, along with basic English, Chinese, and Japanese.

In 1998, Lee entered Starlight Entertainment and became a trainee for 5 years before transferring to Starworld where she became a member of a duet called Sugar, which never debuted. In early 2007, singer Ayumi Lee convinced her to audition and join SM Entertainment. Lee continued her training there, and made her official debut as a member of Girls’ Generation in August 2007. She is one of the lead vocalists and a sub-rapper of the group. The other members of the group are Jessica Jung, Sooyoung, Tiffany, Kim Hyoyeon, Kwon Yuri, Im Yoona and Seohyun.

In early 2008, Lee worked as a co-host of Melon Chunji Radio. In August 2008, she contributed a solo song, You Don’t Know About Love for the SBS drama Working Mom. In 2009, Lee released two songs, a solo track Finally Now for the interactive movie Story of Wine, and a duet with Girls’ Generation’s member Taeyeon, It’s Love for the MBC drama Heading to the Ground. That same year, she became a co-host for the MTV Korea television music program The M, and also joined the KBS2’s variety show Invincible Youth along with Girls’ Generation member Yuri. In March 2010, Lee recorded Your Doll for the soundtrack of the SBS drama Oh! My Lady, which became her first song to enter the Gaon Digital Chart. In January 2012, her voice was featured in the Korean-dubbed version of animated film The Outback, voicing a koala named Miranda. In March 2012, Lee became a host for SBS MTV’s television program Music Island. In 2012, she was cast in her first musical, Catch Me If You Can, and was nominated for Best New Actress at the 6th Musical Awards for the performance. In June 2013, Lee released the song The 2nd Drawer for the MBC drama The Queen’s Classroom. In March 2014, she participated in the Korean-dubbed version of the animated film Rio 2. In June 2014, Lee was cast in her second musical, Singin’ in the Rain, based on the 1952 movie of the same name. Between 2014-2015, she became a cast member of the SBS reality show Roommate. During the same period, Lee hosted the MBC radio show FM Date, where she won the Rookie Radio DJ Award for her hosting at the year-end MBC Entertainment Awards. In March 2016, it was revealed that she would be a celebrity judge in the new show, Vocal War: God’s Voice.

Lee is also often referred to as a Bagel, a word used to define someone with both a baby face and a glamorous body. Due to her time in Kuwait during the Gulf War, Lee grew up being afraid of loud noises.

Why we think she’s hot:

Aegyo is a Korean word which comes from the Chinese characters “ae” for love and “gyo” meaning beautiful. The closest English translation would probably be winsome, which is defined by the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary as generally pleasing and engaging, often because of a childlike charm and innocence. Obviously, Aegyo is considered a feminine trait, attributed to women who can charm via a balance of sweetness & poutiness and cuteness & modesty. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Lee Soon-kyu, the Girl’s Generation star who is affectionately known to a wider audience as Sunny, The Aegyo Queen. Enough said?
