Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentUma Thurman Bio – Smartasses Magazine Uma Karuna Thurman (born April 29, 1970) is an American actress. Thurman was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her father, Robert Thurman, a New York-born professor, is a Buddhist writer and academic. Her mother, Nena von Schlebrugge, is a model of German, Swedish, and Danish descent. Thurman has three brothers, Ganden, Dechen, and Mipam, as well as a half-sister named Taya from her father’s previous marriage. She grew up mostly in Amherst, Massachusetts, and then moved to Woodstock, New York. While her father gave his children a Buddhist upbringing, Thurman now considers herself agnostic.

Thurman attended Northfield Mount Hermon School, a preparatory school in Massachusetts, before dropping out to pursue a career in acting, after talent scouts noticed her performance as Abigail in a production of The Crucible, and offered her the chance to act professionally. Thurman made her movie debut in 1988, appearing in the high school comedy Johnny Be Good as well as the teen thriller Kiss Daddy Goodnight. That same year, she also had a small role playing the goddess Venus in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, in addition to what would become the most acclaimed of her first four films, the Oscar-winning drama Dangerous Liaisons. Thurman’s other notable films and roles include, Kill Bill, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, Les Misérables, Mad Dog and Glory, Beautiful Girls, Pulp Fiction, The Truth About Cats & Dogs, Gattaca and The Avengers. In 1997, despite poor reviews, Thurman was acclaimed for her portrayal of Poison Ivy in the film Batman & Robin. In 2010, she took on the role of Medusa, in the action adventure film Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. In 2012, Thurman had the recurring role of Rebecca Duvall on the television series, Smash, and in 2015, she portrayed Anouk for several episodes of the NBC drama, The Slap.

Thurman has the same name as the Hindu goddess Parvati’s alternate name, Uma, which means Light in Sanskrit. Thurman began her career as a fashion model at age fifteen, and her early modeling credits include the covers of Glamour and British Vogue. During her childhood, Thurman and her siblings spent time in the Himalayan town of Almora, Uttarakhand, India, and the Dalai Lama, to whom her father Robert Thurman had long been close with, once visited their home. Thurman supports the United States Democratic Party, and has given money to the campaigns of John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, and Joseph R. Driscoll. She also supports gun control laws, and in 2000, she participated in Marie Claire’s End Gun Violence Now campaign. Additionally, she is a member of the board of Room to Grow, a charitable organization providing aid to families and children born into poverty. In 2007, she hosted the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway with actor Kevin Spacey. When she was young, she is described as having been an awkward and introverted girl who was teased for her tall frame, angular bone structure, enormous feet and unusual name.

Why we think she’s hot:

Few will argue that The Avengers (think tea & crumpets, not Iron Man and The Hulk) and Batman & Robin, were two of the worst films ever made. Despite this, we affectionately refer to the former as “Uma In A Catsuit” and the latter, despite its awfulness, has the claim to fame of gloriously bringing to life Poison Ivy, one of the absolute greatest female comic book characters ever dreamed up. So yes, the films may be brutally awful, but thanks to Uma Thurman, both of those DVDs are sitting on a shelf inside the Smartasses Office, one on the front side of Pulp Fiction and the other on the back side of Kill Bill. That’s pretty much all you need to know.
