Smartasses Magazine Top 100 - Female EmpowermentValentina Marchei Bio – Smartasses Magazine Valentina Marchei (born May 23, 1986) is an Italian figure skater. Her father, Marco, competed in the marathon at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics. Marchei’s early interests were speed skating and gymnastics, and she was coached by Cristina Mauri from the age of nine. As of December 2014, Marchei competes as a pair skater with Ondřej Hotárek, representing Italy.

Marchei began skating at the age of seven, after she tried gymnastics and roller skating. At age twelve, she won her first Trophy of the Regions in the Italian junior leagues. Marchei’s highest ISU championship placement as a singles skater was fourth at the 2013 European Championship. Before the 2007–08 season, she first trained with Viktor Kudriavtsev in Flims, Switzerland. Marchei then trained in Courchevel, and later in Paris and Milan, coached by Pierre Trente and Cristina Mauri. She injured her knee in September 2007, and ensuingly missed most of the 2008–09 season after injuring her right ankle on a triple Lutz at 2008 Skate America. In 2010, Marchei finished eighth at the European Championships and in 2010–11, she returned to the Grand Prix series, competing at the 2010 Skate Canada International and the 2010 Cup of Russia. She was tenth at the 2011 European Championships. In 2011, Marchei changed coaches to Jason Dungjen and Yuka Sato in Detroit. After suffering ankle and knee injuries in 2011, she finished eighth at the 2012 Worlds in Nice, France, her first World Championship since 2008. Marchei represented Italy at the 2014 Winter Olympics and placed eleventh.

On July 2, 2014, La Gazzetta dello Sport wrote that Marchei and Ondřej Hotárek were considering skating as a pair. Bruno Marcotte confirmed on July 26, 2014 that the two were training together. They are coached by Marcotte in Montreal and by Franca Bianconi in Milan. Marchei-Hotárek won the Italian national title in December 2014. In January 2015, they placed fourth at the European Figure Skating Championships in Stockholm, Sweden and eleventh at the 2015 World Figure Skating Championships in March.

Marchei has worked as a reporter for Italian television.

Why we think she’s hot:

If you’ve ever seen one of those superhero type gals who can shoot fire out of her eyes or fingertips, then you can briefly begin to comprehend the inferno that radiates when Italian figure skater Valentina Marchei hits the ice. She’s elegant, brimming with all sorts of Gemini confidence, and undeniably demands your attention. Well, she got ours. Marchei may not be The Queen, but despite that semantic, someday we’ll be able to tell you exactly how many of those lustrous little diamonds adorn her pristine snow-white skates, because we plan to spend a great deal of our time slavishly prostrating ourselves before her.
